Molecular neuropathology for neurodegenerative diseases (FTLD/ALS) characteristic of TDP-43 accumulation
TDP-43 is a nuclear protein essential for survival of cells. Importantly, TDP-43 is mislocalized and aggregated in the cytoplasm from the nucleus, which causes neurodegenerative diseases such as Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Pathological TDP-43 in the brain of patients has prion-like property that causes seed-dependent TDP-43 aggregation. Moreover, its property enables TDP-43 to propagate through the neuronal network with aging. Our aim is to reveal the process that TDP-43 gains the prion-like property, and to develop the strategy to prevent or remedy TDP-43 proteinopathy.
